SLIDE 02 WIND, SUN, RAIN, SQUIRREL The constant motion provided by an enlivening and often comic combination of elements and animals made this kinetic sculpture a unique fusion of environment and art. Like a child's playground seesaw, the center point of the frame held each end at equal distance to provide balanced opposition of movement. The ends were weighted boxes that housed different loads, counter-weighted; one end held clay that gained and reduced its own weight with moisture and aridity, while the other end housed bird suet, discovered to be a delicious treat by birds and squirrels alike. The piece remained in constant motion at all times, deteriorating with sun, rain, and consumption. For the observer, it provided a constant reminder of the passing of time and the effects of the surrounding elements. |
